Iconoclasts

I shot this image for the October issue of Fast Company magazine. It was a bit of a challenge coming up with a image idea for this concept. The point was to illustrate seeing and thinking in a new, different and creative way, and how iconoclasts have to power to actually change or rewire their brains to come up with new ideas. I needed to find a way to photograph something that shows the workings inside the brain. So, this was what I came up with. It just so happened that there was some guy in napa selling these old old polygraph machines on craigslist. Go figure. Miss Annika is responsible for the lovely illustrations!

Showing some Love for Sea Life

I finished this image about a month ago, and I think it is out in the world by now, although I haven't see them yet. They are posted on the Golden gate Ferries and such, makes sense right? I have herd rumors that they might move inland to bush shelters or other public transportation access points. It was a pro-bono project for the Marine Mammal center. We got to shoot in the oldest butcher shop in SF, which was kind of cool. They had a huge meat locker in the back where i think they still hang whole animals to drain their blood. Yum. : ) Didn't have a chance to shoot back there though, we only had a small window of time to get this done. Anyhow, it was great working with Bulter, Shine & Stern and Partners and Jay Lorenzini who was the AD for the project. There are still a couple more shots to do for the series, and I am really looking forward to it!

does a little crack, every so often. (Nice shot Amber) Went out shooting this weekend.. got some freakin' awesome shots.. i'll share when they are more done. Right now I am just trying to edit it down to the hero 6 shots.. tuff.

Dust and Shit

On location, and breaking in my boots (more).

This last Saturday we went out and shoot for Random house again, for a book called "Wild Girl." It really was anything but WILD. The location, the Menlo Circus Club was this super polished, and our star horse Tully, was like the most gigantic cute obedient puppy ever. I am going back to shoot him and his owner Keara on another day. They are like brother and sister.. despite the obvious major differences, they are both from Ireland and heavily freckled.













I got a great out-take in the stables, a quiet moment that I am going to work on for my book.

Random House Shoots.. starting to be Fairly Regular

Seems like I get a call from these folks every week! Love it! Keep it coming. The work is usually really playfully and although the budgets are not of advertising scale we can usually find a way to get a lot done for very little. In this case I was able to use a background shot from my library, a sunset pic from a Mexico trip. Or course I prefer my un-cropped version, the cover still came out great.

M&Ms

I shot for both these ads a while back. I have been meaning to post them for quite some time. Super fun projects for BBDO NY. I got to travel for both, but for the Indiana Jones one we got to go all the way to capetown.. where everyone looks like a freakin' model. Beautiful people!

So, we didn't have a lot of time, but we managed to get out a bit. Our decision to forgo sleep in our to get the most out of the distance traveled. Here are some random pics.

An Eventful Solstice

I was asked by my soon to be brother-in -law, Eddie Madril, to do a shoot for his upcoming production called the Sun Dagger Solstice for the flyer's and program. He and his brother are both members of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe and are very talented artists, I have had the opportunity to shoot them in the past which was awesome so I was thrilled to go at it again!
Eddie came up with the concept of the main image and I embellished it with adding a background and the style in post.

Sedona

Took a little weekend trip to Sedona to Visit my Mother-in-law. Rented some kind of jeep thing and went off roding all day. They could have made the seats a little cushey-er... but other than that it was great to get away and see some of that good nature stuff.

My Sweet Sweet Raquel!

So the really awesome thing about having this blog.. (and I am trying to keep up with it.. it's so hard to find time!) is that I have an opportunity to share my more experimental work or other images that might not necessarily fit into my "for serious" portfolio. Like this shoot of Raquel.. my good friend whom I met by chance as a budding model at age 17. Now she is living in Paris and shooting for folks like baccarat and even French play boy! Ooh La La. Well, I just love these pics of her, I shot on 4x5 polariod. It was one of our last shoots together before she left.

Random House Publishing

Random House Publishing is putting out new editions of "The Witch of Black Bird Pond" and "Johnny Tremain." I shot the covers for both, which ended up being a really fun adventure in recreating fictional characters. For these two projects I worked directly with Marci Senders, senior designer at Random House Books for Young Readers, and Claire Mack, a super talented SF/LA based wardrobe & prop stylist.

A Little Furniture Shoot In The BIG State Of Texas

Ahhhh... my first trip to Dallas, Texas and I must say that the landscape was impressive. Wished I had more time to just meander around with my camera, but the trip was strictly business. Good fun business! Working with the crew and the very talented John Robinson (dream set designer and prop stylist) was a total blast, and super productive. The shoot was right on site at the American Leather factory and showroom, conveniently, since the custom built pieces on our shot list where coming off the production line only hours prior to the shoot. I got quite the tour. The most mind boggling portion was the floor to ceiling spans of cow hide racks that cover the entire width of the factory. I can't even begin to estimate how many animal skins the whole thing amounted to. Oh! And the smell... Wow! New car times.. 100?! This is a cool time laps video that my bud Sean Franzen made on set. That's me in the green with with brown bob.

A Day Out Scouting

Occasionally I get the opportunity to scout locations for my own shoots. Time permitting, I really enjoy hitting the road and checking things out first hand. This scouting outing is for Random House publishing. I am working on a project with them, for the cover of the book, "The Devil's Paint Box." What is so bitchen about this one is, not only do I get to spend a day shooting on location in the great outdoors, but the photo is going to wrap around the cover, so I get to shoot this whole expansive landscape.... and it's not going to get cropped! The second I saw the comp for this shoot, I knew exactly where to go, and it could not have been more perfect. There were soooo many vistas to choose from.

Boy Minus Girl

Another shoot for Random House... this time in the studio... had my Bub there to be my test subject. She is pretty good and sitting for the camera, (i trained her good!) some times I think I should get her an agent.






I love shooting real people. I got this great out-take from the shoot, and I am not quite sure what to do with it yet, but it's going to show up somewhere... someday. It's to funny to just hang out on my hard drive. It just needs the right location..

The BEST things in life are... Grilled!!

My newest prized possession! Summer is here, and that means some of the best, most freshest produce is everywhere... what better way to cook than on a open flame, while sipping a citrus-y beverage.

We picked up this little guy on a whim, while shopping at OSH for some hedge trimmers. After a three hour build (my hubby is such a good sport! Good job baby!) our modest backyard became a fully legit patio hang out.
To test it out we grilled up some marinated veggies, salmon and a veggie burger while enjoying the last bit of sunlight and cocktails with fresh myers lemons from out own tree. I had fun for a sec playing food photographer... Now All I need to figure out is what to grill for dinner tonight!

ADC Young Gun Competition

I'm a YOUNG GUN! This is a really cool competition put on by the Art Directors Club. It focuses on creative visual artist of all kinds under the age of 30. Every year they make a book featuring all the artists. It's small but pretty cool. You can get it if you really want...
